Pub tenants are being encouraged to attend an upcoming event about the rights, rules and regulations involved in managing a tied pub.

Held by the Pubs Code Adjudicator, Fiona Dickie, the Your Pub, Your Rights event will be held at the iconic Britons Protection pub in central Manchester on March 16, 2022.

Between 1pm and 3pm, interested parties can head down to find out more about the Pubs Code in practice and ongoing work and improvements.

What is the Pubs Code?

You may be surprised to know that six of the largest pub companies own over 8,500 of the tied pubs across England and Wales; these are Admiral, Greene King, Marston’s, Punch Pubs, Star Pubs & Bars, and Stonegate.

For anyone unfamiliar with the pub trade, tied pub tenants are those who must buy their beer and other products and services from their pub company landlord.

In 2016, a new law was introduced, designed to protect tied pub tenants in their dealings with large pub companies.

This is called the Pubs Code - which pub companies must comply with.

What does the Pubs Code include?

The Code aims to do two things: to ensure the pub company treats its tied tenants fairly, and that those tenants are no worse off than if they were free of tie.

This is achieved through what is known as the ‘Market Rent Only’ option.

Tenants can consider this option at certain points in their tenancy to compare the tied and free of tie offers and negotiate the best deal for their business.

But that's not all. The Code also includes rights to valuable information when taking on a new tenancy, when the rent is reviewed, and much more.

These rights all help to increase the tenant’s power within the business relationship.

You can also hear about the challenges faced by tied pubs as they emerge from the pandemic and how the Pubs Code can help.

On March 15 and 16, 2022, the Pubs Code Adjudicator team will also be making an appearance at the Northern Restaurant and Bar 2022 event at the Manchester Central Convention Complex. Visit them at stand G76.
