The answer is simple: Biodegradable disposables are the most environmentally friendly.
Environmental packaging specialist, Biopac, has taken a leading role in research and development to establish high performance alternatives to oil based and unsustainable materials. Their solution is to use biodegradable disposables and packaging items that decompose naturally and with no harmful effects on the environment.
An increasing number of forward-thinking business owners are turning to biodegradable packaging as an environmentally responsible alternative to conventional plastic. Unlike conventional plastics which take 400 years to break down, biodegradable packaging can be composted and turned back into soil in less than 12 weeks.
Mark Brigden, Technical Director at Biopac said, “The importance of using 100% biodegradable products is paramount with the environmental concerns and regulations we face today. These problems can be faced head on by using biodegradable food packaging. These innovative products do not harm the environment as they can be fully composted alongside the food waste associated with it, which is ideal for caterers and streetfood traders.”
As more companies are reassessing their use of packaging and are looking for ways to present more environmentally friendly solutions, Biopac are working hard to expand their range to help businesses in the catering industry reduce the level of impact their operation has on the environment. Biopac's range of biodegradable packaging and catering disposables includes hot cups, cold cups, soup containers, bags, food trays and cutlery.
Mark added, “If all caterers switched just one product line to an eco friendly version they will be helping to significantly reduce the amount of waste going into landfill.”
“You need to be careful though,” warns Mark. “There are products on the market which claim to be 'eco-friendly' but in reality they may be just a conventional plastic with an additive which merely breaks down the material into small fragments. These fragments still take 200 years to disappear. The best way of being certain is to ask for relevant certifications which substantiate any claims for compostability.”
All Biopac's biodegradable products comply with EN13432 which is the European standard for compostability.
